Public transportation has a positive impact on nearly every facet of our lives and economy from taking cars off of the road, to improving the mobility of our communities, to creating and connecting jobs, as well as improving our environment. However, to maintain and improve our system of frequent, reliable, and safe public transportation we need every Virginian to speak up and support our work.
Ridership on our transit systems has declined by as much as 90 percent due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As we begin to plan our recovery, we must ensure that our public transportation network is ready to get our citizens back to work. Please ask our elected representatives to support public transportation in the next stimulus or infrastructure package.
Recently confirmed U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has bold plans for investing in American infrastructure, including public transit. As mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg strongly supported public transportation—and his leadership helped transform the city. Now American public transportation has the opportunity to benefit from his vision and commitment to public transportation as a cornerstone of infrastructure. Please join Voices for Public Transit in congratulating Secretary Buttigieg and underscoring the importance of public transportation.
